Mumbai, July 5 (UNI) An art exhibition based on noted poet and dramatist Kalidasa's 'Meghdoot' theme is underway at the Museum Gallery here.

The exhibition by artist Sachinder Nath Jha began yesterday.

On the exhibit are 25 best paintings. It will be on till July 8.

It will be curated by Elizabeth Rogers, a New Delhi and New York-based art historian and curator.

Speaking to reporters last evening, Jha said ''His theme 'Meghdoot' (Cloud Messenger) is a tribute to celebrated poet and dramatist Kalidasa of the 5th century AD and is inspired by his work of the same title. 'Meghdoot' is a small lyrical piece written uniformly in the Mandakranta metre and consists of 121 stanzas.

''Its two prominent characteristics are nature and love. The story describes the route, which the cloud must take from Central India, where Yaksha is exiled for one year to the city of the Yakshas in the Himalayas where his wife waits with deep chagrin and loneliness,'' he explained.

Among the people who attended the launch included socialities Farzana Contractor, Monica Vaziralli and a few Corporate heads.

The proceeds of one of the paintings will be donated to the Maharashtra Flood Relief Fund.

Jha was born in Bihar and is based in New Delhi. He has been holding solo shows in New Delhi at Triveni Kala Sangam and Raas-Lila, Nitanjali Art Gallery at Alliance Francaise, New Delhi and group shows in Patna, Delhi and Kolkata to name a few.
