Gold hits 1-week low on dollar, Tokyo drops

SINGAPORE, June 8 (Reuters) Gold fell to its lowest level in a week today on the back of a firm dollar and rising US treasury yields that offer a big potential draw for foreign investors.

-- Spot gold hit an intraday low of $657.60 an ounce before rebounding to $659.80/660.40 an ounce by 0042 GMT, hardly changed from $659.50/660.00 late in New York on Thursday.

-- Key April 2008 gold futures <0JAU:> on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange fell 51 yen per gram to 2,601 yen. It hit an intraday low of 2,593 yen, its lowest since May 31.

-- The euro was flat at $1.3422 .

-- The dollar rose against most major currencies on Thursday as expectations for solid global economic growth launched US government debt yields above 5 percent.

-- Silver rose to $13.46/13.50 an ounce from $13.43/13.46 late in New York.

-- Platinum rose to $1,291/1,296 an ounce from $1,290/1,295 late in New York.

-- Palladium dipped to $365/370 an ounce from $366/370 an ounce.

Turk army says will respond to militant attacks

Ankara, June 8: Turkey's General Staff said today the armed forces were determined to fight terrorism and they had an unquestionable right to respond to militant attacks. The statement, posted on the General Staff's Web site, comes amid growing speculation that the army could launch an operation into northern Iraq to tackle Kurdish guerrillas based there. ''The Turkish Armed Forces have an unshakeable determination to fight terrorism and it is an incontrovertible reality.....

Blast kills one, injures 10 in Philippine south

Manila, June 8: A powerful blast ripped through a commuter bus at a crowded public market in the Philippine south, killing one person and injuring 10, a radio station said today, a week after the US embassy warned of such attacks. Witnesses said the bus driver was killed while an undetermined number of people were brought to a nearby hospital when a crude bomb went off at about 1 pm [local time] today in Matalam.....

Car bombs kill 15 in southern Iraq town

Basra (Iraq), June 8: Two car bombs killed 15 people and wounded 32 in the southern Iraqi town of Qurna today, hospital officials said. Police said the blasts happened in quick succession. They said a bus exploded in a bus terminal in one attack while in the other a car blew up in a market. Qurna is north of Basra, Iraq's second largest city. Car bombings are not as common in the Shi'ite-dominated southern region.....
