UPA third anniversary celebrations at low key

New Delhi, May 22 (UNI) The third anniversary celebrations of the UPA government were kept at a low key and the function at the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's house this evening got over within 30 minutes.

With senior leaders of the coalition occupying the podium, Dr Singh made a brief speech highlighting the achievements of his government in office during the last three years. It was followed by a speech made in Hindi by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The Prime Minister then presented a " Report to the People" to Mrs Gandhi, highlighting the important programmes and policies implemented by the government.

It was followed by a dinner which was attended by left party leaders, including Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury, A B Bardhan and D Raja. The BSP leaders also attended the dinner besides several cabinet ministers.

Clashes mar Bangladesh Independence day

Dhaka, Dec 16: Celebrations to mark Bangladesh's independence today were marred by clashes between rival political parties and police ahead of parliamentary elections due next month. The military marked the public holiday with a dawn artillery barrage and people poured into the streets chanting ''victory is forever, let us keep it safe''.
