Pro-LTTE cadre of Tamilar Paasarai arrested

Tiruchirapalli, May 22: In a major breakthrough, sleuths of Tamil Nadu State 'Q' branch police have arrested a 42-year-old member of 'Tamilar Paasarai', (pro-LTTE organisation) who was evading police arrest for the last 17 years from a hideout in Thanjavur, last night, official sources said today.

Talking to sources here a senior 'Q' branch police official said LTTE sympathiser B Kumar alias Raja, hailing from Melapalam village in Mannargudi, was wanted in connection with the planting of a 'bomb kept in a tiffin box' at the State Secretariat in the year 1990. The police averted a major tragedy at that time by defusing the bomb on time.

Acting on a tip off, a police team rushed to the spot and arrested Kumar. The members of the Tamilar Paasarai had been trained in handling weapons by the LTTE in Sri Lanka. They had also collected money from various places in the state for funding the LTTE activities.

Though Kumar was not trained by LTTE, he had collected money for furthering its cause. He along with the founder leader of the Tamilar Paasarai, Elango had attacked teacher in the year 1994 at Mannargudi and robbed cash from him.

He was arrested under sections 120 (B) Conspiracy, 307 (attempt to murder), 24 (1 A) Indian arms act of the IPC and sections three, four and five of Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) 1987.

Kumar was produced at the Tiruchirapalli District and Sessions Judge, a designated court which deals with TADA cases and was remanded to judicial custody.
