Peoples Conference meeting causes traffic gridlocks in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 22 (UNI) A public meeting of Peoples Conference (Sajjad) today led to major traffic snarls, confusion and choas on almost all important routes of the city.

Traffic police officials, posted at different places in the city, found it difficult to regulate traffic as vehicles carrying the supporters of PC to Sher-e-Kashmir park, venue of the meeting, caused heavy traffic jams.

Frequent traffic jams on two important routes -- Maulana Azad road and Residency road -- badly affected normal life.

Buses carrying school children were also stranded for hours at several places because of the jams.

All business activities in the Civil Lines, Hari Singh High Street, Badshah Chowk, Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk and Polo View areas were also affected.

Hundreds of buses carrying PC workers from north Kashmir were directed to use Lalmandi route to reach the venue.

The meeting was organised on the 5th anniversary of death of founder of the organisation, Abdul Gani Lone, who was killed at Eidgah in 2002.

Security forces were deployed in and around the venue of the meeting to thwart any militant attack.

The security forces were issued special passes for the day for proper identification to foil any attempt by militants to enter the park in uniform.

No vehicle was allowed to ply on the road from Radio Kashmir, Srinagar to Poloview and drivers were directed to take alternative routes.

People were highly agitated against holding such meetings in the city which affectes normal life.
