GM India to launch powerful Optra diesel

Chennai, May 22: General Motors (GM) India is planning to launch the Chevrolet Optra TCDi, the most powerful luxury sedan in its price band.

"We are in the final stages of bringing the newest member of the Optra family to the market. It will be manufactured at our Halol plant and hopefully reach Chevrolet retailers by next month," Company Vice-President P Balendran said in a release here today.

Since its launch in 2003, the Optra has set a new benchmark for affordable luxury, he said adding the Optra TCDi diesel extends the value promise of Chevrolet by providing exceptional performance that has never been experienced before.

"We have noticed from our research that diesel cars currently on the market do not deliver the kind of performance a luxury car customer expects," he pointed out adding "the new Optra with a TCDi (Turbocharged Common Rail Direct Injection) engine utilizes second-generation common rail technology, in which diesel fuel is injected at a very high pressure of 1,600 bar through a multi-step injection process.

The new engine also has an exhaust gas recirculation system for clean and efficient operation, he added.
