59 CPI(M) activists arrested

Machilipatnam, May 22 (UNI) As many as 59 Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists, including 39 women, were arrested by the police here today on charges of violating prohibitory orders.

As part of the state-wide "Bhooporatam" agitation, the CPI(M) activists entered the government land near railway station here.

The arrested activists, included CPI(M) Krishna district General Secretary V Umamaheswara Rao.

Havana, Oct 26: Alicia Alonso, the nearly blind matriarch of Cuban ballet, today denounced US sanctions as an ''inhuman and unjustifiable siege'' that has hindered cultural ties between the United States and Cuba. Alonso, 85, called on American artists and intellectuals to speak out against the U.S. embargo that has banned trade with Fidel Castro's communist government and restricted travel between the two countries since the early 1960s.
