No rental charges on roaming likely: Raja

Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), May 19: Communications and Information Technology Minister A Raja today said the proposal to remove the roaming rental charges on mobile phones was still under consideration.

''Discussions are still on to decide on this issue, announced by Mr Dayanidhi Maran,'' the minister told mediapersons at the Airport here.

When reporters pointed out that there was some resistance from the private operators for the free roaming scheme, he said it was under discussions.

To a query whether Chennai would also be included under the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), which was providing telecom services in Mumbai and Delhi, Mr Raja said that such policy decisions could not be taken immediately.

Earlier, the DMK partymen accorded a warm reception to Mr Raja when he arrived here after being elevated to the Telecom and IT portfolio.
