MP: Woman kills daughter on Mother's Day

Bhopal, May 17: City police and the Madhya Pradesh capital's denizens were stunned after news spread that a 30-year-old woman strangled her eight-year-old daughter on May 13, Mother's Day.

''On May 13, Kargil Colony-resident Raeesa Bi lodged a police complaint that her child's body was found in the bathroom of their home. She 'suspected' that the girl was raped and killed,'' Superintendent of Police Anant Kumar Singh told reporters.

Raeesa, who now has four children, alleged that her husband Pyare Miyan (50) desired an incestuous relationship with their daughters.

During the prima facie investigation, Pyare was taken into custody for questioning. However, a medical test did not confirm rape.

''Meanwhile, Raeesa constantly made contradictory statements. She eventually broke down under sustained interrogation,'' explained Mr Singh.

On the fateful day, the girl was adamant about visiting a mausoleum at Raisen. Raeesa thrashed her and the child's constant crying incensed the mother who pressed the girls' mouth and throttled her. A terrified Raeesa then cooked up the rape story and tried to trap her husband with whom she was not having a smooth relationship. For the past year, the couple were living separately in the same flat.
