US committed to make Doha talks successful

Washington, May 17: United States President George W Bush has voiced his administration's commitment to work with India, Brazil and European countries for the successful conclusion of the Doha Round of trade negotiations.

Talking to mediapersons after meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt here yesterday, Mr Bush said, "We're committed to achieving a world that trades more freely; that we recognise we have obligations to do-- to deal with our agricultural subsidies in order to move the Doha Round forward." He said US Trade Representative (USTR) Sue Schwab was committed to working with his European counterparts as well as Brazil and India -the other two countries involved in the Doha Round.

"We believe that it's possible, very possible that we'll be successful. So, we're moving forward optimistically on this issue," he added.

The US President shared Swedish Prime Minister Reinfeldt's concern on greenhouse gases."I assured the Prime Minister here at home that I'm concerned about the environmental issues as well as the national security implication for being too dependent on oil," Mr Bush said.

He also shared his optimism with the Swedish leader about reducing US gasoline consumption by 20 per cent over the next ten years by promoting alternative fuels.

"I talked to him about our desire to work with Europe, China, India, Japan, Australia and other countries on an international framework that will meet the objectives like economic vitality and growth; the advancement of new technologies,...," Mr Bush said.
