RS agitated about insult to non-Hindi languages

New Delhi, May 16: Rajya Sabha today expressed its 'shock and anguish' over the move of the Railways to do away with Oriya and other languages from the Railway signages at stations and Orissa bound trains.

The issue, raised by Mr B J Panda (BJD) during Zero Hour mentions, drew support from all sections in the House. When a train bound to Tamil Nadu or Andhra had Tamil or Telugu signages why only Oriya was singled out for maltreatment by the Railways, Mr Panda questioned. He said he was for use of local languages in all stations and trains at a time when technology was available for the Railways to reach out through local-languages, he said.

He said an Oriya villager travelling by train could not be expected to read English or Hindi languages as also common man from non-Hindi speaking states. "We condemn the attitude of the Railways and condemn the insult to local languages," Mr Panda remarked. His mention got heartfelt association from various sections of Rajya Sabha.

When the members persisted for an assurance, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Pachauri assured the incenced House that he would bring the issue to the notice of the Railways for taking 'appropriate action'.
