Tripura: B'desh offers Multi-Protocol; Sherpur port

Agartala, May 16: With consistent efforts by Indian authorities, Bangladesh has finally agreed to offer Multi-Protocol status to Sherpur river port for carrying goods by water-way from other parts of India to Tripura via Kolkata.

Official sources here today said that as per the agreement, Bangladesh would allow India to use both water and surface transport for carrying goods from Kolkata to Agartala via Sherpur.

As per the official agreement of the protocol, Mr D.N.Srivastav, Diplomat in the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, asked the Bangladeshi authorities to deploy custom officials at Sherpur port, as India was keen to start using the port at the earliest, officials said.

Elaborating on India's interest in the port, sources stated that most of the North East states transported goods by road via Kolkata and it took at least eight days to reach Agartala, Aizawl, Kohima and Imphal.

A goods carrier could not carry more than 15 metric tonnes load at a time and it cost about Rs 70,000, while through the Sherpur port, a ship could carry more than hundred times higher load at a cost of only Rs 17,000 within a day.

Consequently, Agartala would become the export-import hub as well as the transport facilitator for the NE, officials said, adding that India was now convincing Bangladesh to repair the 100 km roads in its territory between Sherpur port to Akhura check post for increasing export-import business between India and Bangladesh.
