Tainted cop remanded in judicial custody

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 15 (UNI) An assistant police sub inspector, arrested in an extortion case, was today remanded in judicial custody.

Ankush Kharat had allegedly extorted Rs 53,000 from a jeep driver on May 10.

The jeep driver, working in a private company, was signalled to stop by the police officer and his accomplice. When the former did not stop, the duo chased the vehicle and, after forcing it to halt, clandestinely slipped a bomb-like object into the jeep, according to the police.

The police officer, then, accused the jeep driver of carrying explosives, and demanded Rs one lakh for suppressing the case. After negotiations, the amount was settled at Rs 53,000.

Subsequently, the driver informed the company's manager who handed over the money to Kharat. But, later upon learning the truth from the jeep driver, the manager approached Police Commissioner Uddhav Kamble and a complaint was registered against Kharat.

Kharat has been suspended from service and a departmental enquiry has been ordered against him.

Subsequent to his arrest, Kharat was produced before the court which had remanded him in police custody. Upon the expiry of his police custody, Kharat was once again produced before the court today which remanded him in judicial custody.
