SC stays proceedings against Shilpa Shetty

New Delhi, May 15: In a major relief to Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, the Supreme Court today stayed further proceedings in cases of obscenity pending against her in courts in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The interim stay was granted by a Bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran while issuing notices on a petition filed by her seeking transfer of these cases to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Mumbai.

Earlier, her counsel Anand Grover asked the court to stay further proceedings in these cases till disclosure of her tranfer petition by the apex court.

Several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) were filed in various courts after Hollywood actor Richard Gere kissed Shetty in public during an AIDS awareness programme.

Shetty pleaded in her transfer petition that she frequently travelled within the country and abroad and since she was based in Mumbai, it would be convenient for her to attend court in the metroplis.

A Jaipur court had issued an arrest warrant and a court in Ghaziabad had summoned both Gere and Shetty on PILs filed against them for obscenity and indecent behaviour in public.
