Army Men Atop Everest

New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) Adding yet another glorious chapter to their saga, six men of the Indian Army summitted the world's highest peak Mt Everest early this morning -- the fourth Everest ascent by the Indian Army.

According to information received here, the six summitteers of the Indian Army Mountaineering Expedition climbed atop the 8,848-metre Mt Everest at 0545hrs (IST) this morning.

The six summiteers were Captain DJ Singh, Subedar Maruti Khandagle, Havaldars Balwant Singh Negi, Tshering Angchok, Amardev Bhatt and Sepoy Sachin Patil.

The expedition leader is Lieutenant Colonel IS Thapa of the 4 Maratha Light Infantry.

With today's feat, the Indian Army has furthered its formidable reputation in the international mountaineering fraternity having summitted Mt Everest four times.

In fact during the past seven years, Army mountaineers have scaled a 8,000-metre-plus peak every year including Mt Everest (8,848m) in 2001, 2003 and 2005 and Annapurna-I (8,096m) in 2004.
