2nd Karnataka State Chess C'ship gets underway

Bangalore: Chess prodigy Girish Kashyap, besides over 50 FIDE (World Chess Federation) Masters, would be among the 175 participants in action at the state level FIDE rated Second Karnataka State Chess Championship '07, which got underway today at Malleshwarm Club.

The six-day tourney with the Rs 48,000 prize money at stake was inaugurated by president of Malleshwaram Association (MA) M Prabhakar.

The tournament held under the auspicious of United Karnataka Chess Association, serves as selection trials for the National tourney scheduled to be held at Dindigul in June with top four players representing the state in the Nationals.

Title holder Sanjay N, an employee of the Income Tax dept, was given top billing in the tourney with a FIDE rating of 2339. Sanjay will battle it out with Mysore lad Tej Kumar (2323), Shivananad B S (2320), Srinivas Sarja (2274) and Aravind Shastri (2265) for top honours at MA.

Girish Kashyap, a promising ten-year old, who made rapid strides in the sport in world junior arena with two titles in his kitty, World Champion in U-10  and  for Asian Champion in U-8 (2006), is a player to watch out. Also the State Woman Champion Shruti (1943), a lone woman in the fray is one of the strong contenders for the title.

Laxman emerges sole leader in Open Chess

Kozhikode, Aug 10: Second seed R R Laxman of Tamil Nadu emerged sole leader with 5.5 points defeating O T Anil Kumar of Kerala (4.5) in the sixth round of the S K Pottekkat Gold Medal Fide-rated All India Open Chess tournament here today. Important results: R R Laxman (TN) 5.5 bt O T Anil Kumar (Ker) 4.5, Chatterji Laltu (WB) 4.5 drew with Nimmy A George (Ker) 4.5, P Sree Kumar (Ker) 4.5 drew with P Karthikeyan (TN).....
