Two farmers commit suicides

Akola, May 14 (UNI) Two farmers have committed suicides in the last 24 hours due to mounting debts and failure of crops respectively.

The farmers have been identified as Sahdeo Sukhdeo Chakre and Ramtakepura Rambhau Pachpohe, police said today.

Chakre, a resident of Mazalapur Daspura village, near here, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Saturday. He had taken loans of Rs 18,000 and Rs 60,000 from a bank and money-lender respectively. Constant failure of crops and inability to repay the loan amount drove him to take such a drastic step, police said.

Pachpohe, a resident of Ramtekpura in Akot town, about 40 km from here, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his house yesterday. Constant failure of crops forced him to take extreme step, they added.

The spate of farmer suicides continues in the Vidarbha region despite several measures announced by the Union and state governments.
