MSU student released on Rs 5,000 bond

Vadodara, May 14 (UNI) A local court today released on bail Chandramohan, a fine arts post-graduate student of the Maharaja Sayajirao University, five days after he was arrested for ''hurting public sentiments'' through his 'obscene' exhibits of Vishnu and Jesus Christ.

He was released on a bond of Rs 5,000 by Magistrate M J Parashar.

Chandramohan, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, was arrested from the campus on May 9.

Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity 200 students assembled here from Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi, assembled here, to defend Chandramohan.

Earlier, VHP and BJP workers barged into the Fine Arts faculty of the University and vandalised art exhibits of gods and goddesses displayed by Chandramohan.

An ex-VHP member and a local advocate Neeraj Jain had filed a complaint with police against Chandramohan for ''hurting public sentiments.'' Some Christian groups have also objected to the art works.

The arrest of Chandramohan had led to protests from students and teachers alike with the Dean of Fine Arts department, Shivaji Panikkar who was suspended after he refused to close the controversial art exhibition.
