GSU seeks public support for fresh inquiry into Williamnagar firing

Shillong, May 14 (UNI) Seeking public support to force the state government to institute a fresh inquiry into the police firing at Williamnagar, the Garo Students' Union has decided to host a 'mass public rally' on May 16.

The GSU, along with the Opposition Nationalist Congress Party, have demanded fresh inquiry into the firing incident alleging that the report submitted by Justice(Retd) D N Baruah was 'incomplete' and 'partial'.

Five people, including a woman, were killed in the police firing on September 30, 2005, over the issue of revamping and restructuring of the Meghalaya Board of School Education, which had its headquarters at Tura in West Garo Hills district.

''The public will decide on May 16, what actions to be taken to pressurise the state government to institute a fresh inquiry into the Williamnagar incident,'' GSU Publicity Secretary Appu R Marak told UNI here today.

Mr Marak said the mass rally would also seek a mass support for demand of creating 'North Garo Hills District' and ''Separate Garo State Demand'.

Earlier, Chief Minister D D Lapang said that the government was examining the inquiry report of the twin police firing at Tura and Williamnagar.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma said that the party would approach Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and ask him to order a CBI probe into the incident.
