20 injured in lathicharge on Cong workers

Indore, May 14 (UNI) At least 20 people, including women, were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse a stone-throwing mob of Congress workers staging demonstration at the entrance of the municipal corporation office here today.

The Congress protest was against shortage of drinking water and corruption in the civic body, party spokesman K K Mishra said, adding at least 20 people, including women, were injured in ''brutal'' police action.

Police fired 10 rounds of teargas shells to disperse the mob, which blocked all gates and broke earthen pitchers to highlight water shortage. The demonstrators retaliated with stone-throwing when the police tried to disperse the mob using lathis followed by teargas.

The Congress spokesman condemned the police action saying it was an attempt to silence democratic protest. Similar, police action was made on innocent farmers demanding BT cotton seeds at Khargone, he said.

''The BJP government, which failed on all fronts, had resorted to repressive action exhibiting its fascist face'', Mr Mishra added.
