New Delhi, May 11: The 'Mayawati factor' worked magic as the BSPswept Uttar Pradesh today, dethroning the Mulayam Singh Yadavgovernment and appearing all set to give a stable government to thelargest Indian state after years of political instability.
Trends available from 361 constituencies after counting of votesin the seven-phased polling indicated that the BSP was ahead in 177constituencies in the 403-member assembly.
The Mayawati wave in the state was so intense that virtually allpoll pundits were proved wrong. None of the exit poll projections hadgiven her BSP more than 140 seats.
The Samajwadi Party of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav sufferedhumiliating reverses in several key bastions and the trends indicatedthat the party was leading in some 90 constituencies.
However, the UP poll outcome seemed to be a waterloo for the BJPas the party suffered major setbacks and was ahead in just about 50seats. The party's below expectations performance in the state is beingconsidered a personal blow to BJP President Rajnath Singh, who hailsfrom the state.
Despite hectic campaigning in the state by Congress PresidentSonia Gandhi and her children, the Congress was in the lead in onlyabout 25-30 constituencies.
The RLD of Mr Ajit Singh was leading in 7 constituencies,Independents were ahead in 8 seats while the JD (U) and the LoktantrikCongress were in the leads in one seat each.
BSP General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra was delighted over thecounting trends and hoped the final tally would see his party formingits own government with a clear majority. The Congress, meanwhile,indicated that it was prepared to extend outside support to the BSP inthe formation of a government in the state.
Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, also the SP supremo, was leading in both theseats of Bharthana and Gunnaur, BJP state president Keshrai NathTripath was trailing in Allahabad(south), controversial independentcandidate from Kunda, Raghuraj Pratap Singh 'Raja Bhaiyya' andmafia-turned-legislator Mukhtar Ansari from Mau were trailing in theirrespective constituencies. Another mafia-turned-politician Amar ManiTripathi, who contested the election from behind bars, was leading inthe Laxmipur seat in Maharajganj district.
SP general secretary and PWD minister Shivpal Singh was leading in the Jaswantnagar assembly constituency.
BJP legislator party leader Lalji Tandon was trailing in theLucknow (west) seat, while SP leader and UP transport minister NareshAgwarwal was leading from Hardoi.
SP leader and Revenue Minister Ambika Choudhary was leading fromKochipeet in Ballia, while the president of Apna Dal, an ally of BJP,Sone Lal Patel was trailing in the Kolasla assembly constituency.
The BSP was leading in four of the five seats in Mathura district.It was leading on Chata, Govardhan, Gokul and Mathura, whileLoktantraik Congress was ahead in Nat.
