JPMorgan launches India equity fund

Mumbai, Apr 19: JPMorgan Asset Management India Pvt Ltd (JPMAMIPL) today announced the launch of its maiden domestic fund, JPMorgan India Equity Fund.

This open ended, equity growth scheme aims to generate income and long term capital growth from a diversified portfolio of predominantly equity and equity related securities including equity derivatives. Open for subscription from April 19 to May 18, units in the fund will be priced at Rs 10 during the new fund offer.

In addition to the usual distributor linked activities, JPMAMIPL will provide additional value to the distributor's overall business model by making available a number of educational programmes to distributors and their staff and associates.

Krishnamurthy Vijayan, CEO, JPMAMIPL, said at the launch, ''We are set to grow the Indian business rapidly, providing Indian investors with the same levels of investment expertise and service that our clients in other parts of the world have come to expect. We see the JP Morgan Equity Fund as the first step to doing this.'' Globally, the JPMorgan asset mangement business manages USD 6 billion of assets which are invested in a select group of about 45 Indian stocks.

Harshad Patwardhan, Investment Manager-Equity, JPMAMIPL said, ''With our collaborative framework, India equity Fund will be able to leverage off the experience of our investment professionals elsewhere in Asia, in addition to the expertise of the four member fund mangement team based in India.''

Beijing still hopes for torch relay to Taiwan

Beijing, Apr 19: Beijing organisers still believe a solution is possible to the problem of taking the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay to the island of Taiwan, an official said today.

Russia floats nuclear power plants for export

Moscow, Apr 19: Russia has started building the world's first floating nuclear power station, officials said, a project anti nuclear activists say is the most dangerous to come out of the atomic sector for a decade.

Russia hopes to export the power plants for use in seas from the Indian Ocean to the Arctic. The first floating station is due to be ready in 2010 and there are plans to build six more.

Sheikh Hasina vows to defy ban on her return

Singapore, Apr 19: Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has vowed to defy the army backed interim government's bar on her return to the country, telling the BBC she planned to arrive in Dhaka next Monday.

The Awami League party chief, currently on a private visit to the United States, said that ''nothing would stop'' her return to participate in elections and defend herself against charges of murder and extortion.

Hasina told the BBC's Bengali service she would fly today.....

Three blasts hit SW France overnight, no injuries

Bordeaux, Apr 19: Simultaneous explosions occurred overnight in three towns in the southwest of France near the Spanish border, causing some damage to buildings but no casualties, a police source todsy said.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the blasts, which occurred at around 2430 IST yesterday in Ciboure, Guethary and Saint-Jean-de Luz.

An anonymous telephone call alerted the fire brigade to the three devices one hour before the explosions but they were not found in time.

Windows were shattered.....
