B'lore 4th cleanest city among 18 state capitals

Bangalore, Apr 7: IT hub Bangalore ranks the fourth cleanest city among 18 State Capitals, according to a Lifebuoy Cleanliness Survey.

The city ranked fourth with a score of 108, as against the all-city average of 100. The areas where the city have done well were clean roads, efficient garbage disposal system and greenery and plantations, a release here said today.

Chandigarh emerged the clear winner with a score of 144, followed by Chennai and Kolkata with scores of 118 and 108 respectively.

The survey, conducted by A.C. Nielsen ORG MARG, took into account the opinion of citizens on cleanliness in their cities, the release said.

Soap brand Lifebuoy had taken the pioneering step in enhancing awareness about health, hygiene and cleanliness in the country by commissioning a pan-India city cleanliness survey - the 'Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna City Meter'. In keeping with its commitment to health and hygiene, Lifebuoy was conducting a 'Clean City Drive' across several cities to enhance awareness about cleanliness, it added.

Hoogenband topples Popov in 100m freestyle

Sydney: Pieter van den Hoogenband toppled Alexander Popov as Olympic 100 metres freestyle champion on Wednesday, ending the Russian's eight-year reign.Australia's Michael Klim took the early initiative to lead at the turn but it was tight all the way until van den Hoogenband eased slightly clear some 15 metres from the finish to win in 48.30 seconds.Popov tried in vain to catch him and had to settle for the silver in 48.69, with American Gary Hall, who finished second.....
