ZoRO opposed fencing along Indo-Myanmar border

Aizawl, March 22: Zo Reunification Organisation (ZoRO) has supported opposition parties in Mizoram against the private member resolution of ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) for putting pressure on Centre to expedite the fencing of Indo-Myanmar border.

ZoRO statement criticised the resolution saying this would hamper the nascent reunification process of tribes under the Mizo nomenclature across the border.

''It is unfortunate, the former Mizo Zirlai Pawl leader, the organiser of first ZOFEST towards reunification of Zo tribes has initiated the resolution, which could put an end to process'', the statement said.

It further stated that British had made divisions in Zo tribes through geo-political boundaries, but this was tried to be rectified through an Act of Parliament in 1892 which is yet to be implemented even after 115 years.

In the 1892 Chin Hills Regulations Act, permission had been given for people from the then Burma and Mizoram to cross the border freely within a distance of 25 miles on both sides.

Mizo people opposed any move by the Indian or Myanmar government to remove the special status accorded and stated that it was disappointing that Mizo MLAs were trying erect a wall between two brothers community, the statement added.

ZoRO had taken up the cause of uniting the various tribes categorised under Zo nomenclature about 30 years back and has been actively involved in UNO proceedings for recognition of Zo tribes as a nation occupying and having its own territory.
