Former BMC Inspector convicted

Mumbai, Mar 21 (UNI) The ACB special court today convicted a former Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Gumta licence inspector to four years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and fine of Rs 10,000 in a bribery case.

Pronouncing the judgement here, the Additional Session Court Judge D P Pujari said accused Bhagwan Mahadeo Sathe was held guilty under section 7 of the corruption act to suffer two-years RI and fine of Rs five thousand and in default he will have to undergo further RI for three-months.

The court also held him guilty under section 13(1)(d)r/w 13 (2) of corruption act to suffer four-years RI and fine of Rs 5000 or in default he will have to undergo further RI for three-months.

Both the sentences will run concurrently, but he will have to pay total fine of Rs 10000, Mr Pujari added.

Additional Public Prosecutor Dilip Shah said on November 25,2001, complainant Satish Jogaram Halwai went to K-west ward of BMC at Andheri with a request to transfer the Gumta licence in the name of his mother as his father was expired. The accused had demanded Rs 5000 for transfer of the licence.

The complaint was agreed to pay the amount and simultaneously he had lodged a complaint with ACB office at Worli. On December 31, 2001, when complainant went to pay the bribe amount, the accused was nabbed red-handed by ACB sleuths.
