Cabinet approves security for Indian cricket team

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its ex-post-facto approval to the proposals for India's support to the Cricket World Cup organisers on security issues, particularly keeping in view the high level of security threat to the Indian Cricket Team.

A two-member Advance Liaison Team comprising one officer each of Intelligence Bureau and National Security Guards would immediately proceed to Port of Spain for about a week to tie-up all arrangements with the organizers, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.

IB would spare two officers for placement in the Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre (RIFC), in rotation, till the return of the Indian Cricket Team, in order to coordinate the intelligence sharing.

One officer each of IB and Delhi Police would remain attached with the Indian Cricket Team, in rotation, for security liaison duty.

Two Bomb Disposal Squads (BDSs) of National Security Guards (NGS) comprising 3 officers, 1 JCO and 12 other ranks would be deputed.

The total strength of 16 ( inclusive of protection elements) would operate under the overall command and control of the CARICOM Organization, Planning and Coordinating Staff (COPACS).

The total expenditure to be incurred in providing the above is estimated at Rs. 2.58 crores.

This decision was taken by the Cabinet since the host countries lacked adequate infrastructure and training manpower for the security requirements during the World Cup matches, they had approached countries like US, Canada, UK, France, South Africa, India and others for assistance in counter-terrorism, explosive ordnance disposal, disaster management, explosive detection etc.

''The implementation of the Cabinet's decision would further improve our political and strategic objectives in the Caribbean region besides providing security to the Indian Cricket Team having the highest security threat among all participating nations,'' Mr Dasmunsi said.

The security assistance to the Organizers of CWC-2007 is being provided during the period March to May 2007 till completion of Cricket World Cup.
