Ex-IB officer arrested for murder of advocate; gets 14 days JC

Port Blair, Mar 21 (UNI) Arrested CISF Commandant K Suresh Kumar was today remanded in judicial custody for another 14 days by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Port Blair.

Earlier this month, the CJM's court had sentenced Kumar to 12 days' judicial custody (JC) which ended today.

Kumar was arrested in 2003 for allegedly killing lawyer and social activist, Ms T Vasantha in Andaman. He was arrested on March 7 by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The CISF Commandant, who was posted at Kochi airport, was yesterday brought here from Kolkata.

CBI sources said Kumar had been charged under sections 302 (murder), 449 (trespass) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC.

Kumar was posted with the Intelligence Bureau in Port Blair during 2003 when lawyer Vasantha was murdered there.

After the first 12 days' JC, CBI team had taken him to Kolkata for investigation.

Sources told UNI that a bail petition filed by his lawyers was also rejected today in Port Blair.

''We are working more in this case and many more things may come out,'' said Deputy SP of CBI D Ghosh here.

Suresh Kalmadi says India is ahead in countdown for Commonwealth Games
