Khongmen, first woman MP from NE, passes away

Shillong, Mar 18: Former member of Parliament and educationist Bonily Khongmen passed away here yesterday. She was 92.
&13;
The first woman MP from the North Eastern region, Ms Khongmen,&13;also served as Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly from 1946&13;to 1951.
&13;
She was also unanimously elected twice as a member of the Gauhati&13;University and served in important committees and selected committees&13;of the Assembly.
&13;
&13; In 1953, she attended the 10th session of the United Nations as delegate and worked in the Committee of Human Rights.
&13;
In 1957, after the dissolution of Parliament, she was elected&13;Member and Chairman of the Assam Public Service Commission for a term&13;of six years.
&13;
&13; She was appointed member of the Union Public Service Commission in 1963 till 1970.
&13;
She was also the Chairman of the first Nagaland Public Service&13;Commission from 1970 to 1974 and appointed Chairman of the first Pay&13;Commission in the government of Nagaland in 1975.
&13;
Apart from her service career, she was an social worker and member&13;of Young Women's Christian Association, Chairman of the Eastern Indian&13;Women's Association, Chairman of Meghalaya chapter of the Indian&13;Council of Child Welfare.
&13;
She will be laid to rest in the All Saints' Church cemetery near&13;the official residence of General Officer Commanding 101 Area.
