IGNOU redefines education in NE: Jacob

Shillong, Mar 18: Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob has lauded Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for playing a leading role in redefining education to meet the changing needs of the society.

Addressing the 18th Convocation of IGNOU here yesterday, Mr Jacob said at present IGNOU offers up to 129 programmes and the span of programmes ranges from the awareness level to the cutting edge level in the frontiers of knowledge.

''The university offers high quality, innovative and need-based programmes at different levels, especially to the disadvantaged segments of society, at affordable costs by using a variety of media and technology, '' Mr Jacob said.

The use of technology by the University had added a new dimension in distance and open learning system, especially in strengthening the learners' support services, Mr Jacob asserted.

He said for the educational development of the North Eastern region, the university had executed the North East Project (NEP), funded by the Prime Minister's non-lapsable fund.

The university had also taken initiative to train the untrained in-service school teachers of the region through the innovative certificate programmes in primary education, Mr Jacob informed.

Mizoram bans import of Myanmarese livestock

Aizawl, March 18: Mizoram administration has banned the entry of&13; all Myanmarese livestock into India following the report of outbreak of&13; bird-flu in Myanmar.&13; The decision had effected the market, as about 70 per cent of the&13; livestock meant for the state's consumption came from Myanmar in&13; cheaper rates.&13; According to animal husbandary department officials, police and&13; veterinary officials were keeping a strict vigil at Zokhawthar, border&13; trade point on Mizoram's side, to prevent trade.....

Jaya on fast; condemns Centre, TN on Cauvery

Chennai, Mar 18: Upping the ante on the Cauvery issue, AIADMK&13; General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today observed a day-long fast to&13; condemn the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Government for their ''failure''&13; to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The fast was also to demand the Centre to immediately notify the final award in the official gazette.&13; The Valluvar Kottam area, the venue of the agitation, wore a&13; festive look with thousands of AIADMK.....
