Two killed in police firing, Inquiry ordered

Patna, Mar 16 (UNI) The Bihar government tonight ordered a judicial inquiry into police firing at Matihani in Begusarai district in which two died and as many injured.

Earlier in the day, an unruly mob attacked and torched the block office at Matihani and damaged government vehicles besides other public properties.

District Magistrate Sanjeev Hans said that some anti-socials in the mob attacked the police and started stone pelting when use of canes and lathis failed to repulse the furious mob, the police opened fire in self defence.

The people were furious following announcement that the scheduled programme of distribution of ration coupons among them had been postponed.

CPI and CPI(ML) called a 12-hour Begusarai bandh tomorrow to protest today's polcie firing.

Rs 3 cr limited deficit budget placed in Bengal Assembly

Kolkata, Mar 16 (UNI) West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta today placed a Rs three crore 'limited deficit budget' proposals for 2007-08 in the assembly with the main focus to generate at least 800,000 additional jobs and improving the scale of public income. Presenting the budget for the next fiscal in the 294-member assembly which was boycotted by the entire opposition on the Nandigram issue, Dr Dasgupta said of the total budget proposal for Rs 46,214 crore,the amount of planned expenditure.....

Extend tax holiday for hotels to entire country: Tourism Min

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) The Union Tourism Ministry has recommended extension of the five-year tax holiday for hotels in the National Capital Region (NCR) to other parts of the country to encourage creation of more accommodation to cope up with the increasing tourist flow. The tax holiday for the NCR was announced in the Union Budget 2007-08 to attract more new hotels for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games 2010. Consumers act being amended: Pawar

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) The Consumer Protection Act is being amended to make it more dynamic, responsive and consumer friendly as well as the number of National Commission being increased from five to nine to further strengthen it. As a result of earlier amendments in the Act and Rules, the National Commission is now able to hold sittings in three benches and has also been holding sittings of its Circuit Benches in different cities, said Public Distributiion and Consumer Affairs.....
