Total bandh in Nandigram

Nandigram, Mar 16 (UNI) The Opposition-sponsored 12 hour statewide bandh to protest the killing of 14 people here evoked total response in the site of the incident.

All shops and markets remained closed in both east and west Midnapur district.

Buses went off the roads and no vehicles plied.

Meanwhile, a clash took place between the CPI(M) and AITC activists at about 1000 hours in front of the Midnapur collectorate building.

Police said as the District co-ordination committee members tried to enter the District Magistrate's West Midnapur Office, the Trinamool Congress supporters tried to prevent them leading to a clash between them. They pelted stones at each other. Four TMC supporters were injured in stone throwing.

Heavy police arrangements were made in front of the District Magistrate office here.

Meanwhile, social activist Anuradha Talwar was prevented from entering Reapara in Nandigram by armed CPM supporters this morning.

They lay down in front of her car, preventing her from entering the place.

Extend tax holiday for hotels to entire country: Tourism Min

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) The Union Tourism Ministry has recommended extension of the five-year tax holiday for hotels in the National Capital Region (NCR) to other parts of the country to encourage creation of more accommodation to cope up with the increasing tourist flow. Consumers act being amended: Pawar

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) The Consumer Protection Act is being amended to make it more dynamic, responsive and consumer friendly as well as the number of National Commission being increased from five to nine to further strengthen it. Haryana presents Rs 6.86 cr deficit budget

Chandigarh, Mar 16 (UNI) Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh today presented a Rs 21,967 crore budget for 2007-08 with a deficit of Rs 6.86 crore, with no new tax proposals. Presenting the budget estimates in the state assembly, Mr Singh said the year 2007-08 was likely to open with a deficit of Rs 33.48 crore and to close with a deficit of Rs 6.86 crore with year's account surplus of Rs 26.62 crore.
