Sex racket invlolving PI triggers debate in Guj police

Ahmedabad, March 16 (UNI) The arrest of senior police inspector H B Pandya in a sex racket continues to dog the Ahmedabad police, as the matter was discussed heatedly in a meeting called by Director General of Police, Gujarat at the IPS mess.

Pandya, booked on charges of raping a sex worker was arrested on March 12 by Deputy Commissioner of police N D Solanki, who is believed to have a long standing rivalry with Pandya.

According to sources, in the meeting held on Wednesday, Director General of Police P C Pande, who was the Commissioner of police in Ahmedabad during the 2002 communal violence, expressed concern over the internal squabbling among the officers.

City Police Commissioner J Mahapatra also broached the issue of alleged misuse of striking force assigned to senior police officers.

''Mahapatra alleged the misuse of striking force by some officers and asked to curb it immediately,'' said the source.

Meanwhile, police interrogated constable Kirit Dave, complainant in the case against Pandya and other accused during investigation into the sex racket, which began on Thursday.

Sources said Kirit corroborated the facts stated in the complaint and Pandya was planning to move court for bail on Friday.

On March 12, Pandya and his two constables allegedly forced three girls of the brothel for intercourse with them at a resort on the outskirts of Ahmedabad against their will.

DCP Solanki, who busted the racket, said the accused were arrested when one of the two arrested girls, Varsha was traced by him near IIM in Vastrapur during night patrolling on Sunday.

Fire breaks out in Thane theatre

Thane, Feb 20 (UNI) A fire broke out at the prestigious Ram Ganesh Gadkari theatre here and gutted the balcony today, fire brigade sources said. The fire that broke out late tonight was the result of an electrical short circuit, sources said. The audience and theatre artists were immediately moved to safer places. Four fire tenders and a water tanker were pressed into service, sources added. UNI.....
