Salem Division formation put on hold: Vijayakumar

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 16 (UNI) Kerala Law Minister M Vijayakumar, told the Assembly today that the Railway ministry had temporarily stopped its work or setting up a new railway division at Salem, following Kerala government's intervention.

In a written reply, he said the state had also urged the Railway Ministry to allot a special ''peninsular zone'' to the state.

The Railways, which had decided to bifurcate the Palakkad division for forming a new Salam division, had even allocated Rs three crore in the budget, forcing the state government to mount pressure on the Centre to stop the measure.

AP police stations on red alert after Bastar attack

Hyderabad, Mar 16 (UNI) Following the naxal attack on a police post at Bastar in Chhattisgarh which killed 54 policemen yesterday, police stations located on the Andhra Pradesh-Chhattisgarh border at Warangal and Khammam districts were put on red alert. Police sources said all roads leading to police stations were blocked near the border areas to prevent any large-scale attack similar to the Bastar incident. Budget not election oriented: Kumaraswamy

Bangalore, Mar 16 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today asserted that the JD(S)-BJP coalition will run its full steam of 27 more months and will not be derailed after his tenure ends later this year. Arrack, lottery ban entails Rs 1,500 cr loss for K'taka

Bangalore, Mar 16 (UNI) Karnataka will incur a potential revenue loss of aabout Rs 1,500 crore due to the ban on sale of arrack and lottery, effective from next fiscal, Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said today. Speaking to newspersons here after presenting the budget for 2007-08, he said the Government would make up the loss through the natural growth the state witnessed in revenue collections, besides enhanced devolution of funds from the Centre in view of the high growth......
