LS nod to pharmaceutical research institutes

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) Amid bedlam over the Nandigram violence, the Lok Sabha today passed without discussion a Bill providing for the setting up of additional National Insititutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in the country to meet the shortage of skilled manpower in the pharmaceutical industry.

One such institute already exists in Mohali, Punjab, set up under the 1998 Act.

The Bill, moved by Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, replaces the ordinance promulgated on January 29.

The ordinace was promulgated to undertake preparatory work for starting courses in the proposed institutes from the July 2007 academic session.

The Special Committeee, constituted by the Human Resource Development Ministry, had recommended in its 1987 Report the setting up of more NIPER-like institutes in one or two decades in various regions of the country.

The working Group on Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, set up by the Planning Commission, had recommended establishmentment of at least five NIPERs in the 11th Plan.

The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals had also recommended setting up of such institutes.

India launches new test to check HIV/AIDS infection in children

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) India is among the few countries in the world to introduce DNA polymerase Chain Reaction test for effectively testing HIV/AIDS in children, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss said in a written reply that currently used rapid ELISA tests detect antibodies to HIV which are present in children of HIV positive mothers and may give false positive results in children under 18 months of age. Real estate prices delay growth in IT sector: Maran

Cases of misuse of SEZ customs duty concessions detected

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) There were case of misuse of customs duty concessions provided to Special Economic Zones (SEZs), the Lok Sabha was informed today. Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam in a written reply said the highest misuse of customs duty concession was detected during 2003-04 which was to the tuneofRs 117.17 crores. This however gradually declined to Rs 0.28 crores during 2006-07 upto February, 2007. UNI.....
