Life grinds to halt, violence marks Bengal bandh

Kolkata, Mar 16 (UNI) Life came to a grinding halt in West Bengal today as sporadic violence marked the opposition-sponsored statewide bandh in protest against Wednesday's police firing at Nandigram.

Bandh supporters, belonging to the opposition Trinamool Congress, Congress and SUCI, disrupted railway services by squatting on tracks, put up road blockades, attacked government offices and set ablaze vehicles in different parts of the state.

About 800 people were arrested in different parts of the state on various charges as bandh supporters beat up government officials, set ablaze buses, attacked vehicles and disrupted rail and road traffic, Inspector General of Police(Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said.

Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said Congress supporters beat up the Additional District Magistrate and four top officials in North Dinajpur district. Deputy Magistrate Probhat Chatterjee was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, he said.

Altogether 12 people, including two police officials were injured when bandh supporters clashed with law keepers in Jalpaiguri town while reports of clashes between rival party supporters were received from Birbhum.

Six injured in a blast in Asom

Guwahati, Mar 16 (UNI) At least six people were injured, one of them critically, when an explosion rocked a motor-cycle parking lot beside the busy AT Road in the heart of the city today. At least 12 motorcycles were burnt in the fire, which engulfed the area following the blast. Rs 3 cr budget to generate 8 lakh addl employment

Kolkata, Mar 16 (UNI) A Rs three crore deficit budget was placed in the West Bengal Assembly today by the state finance minister with the main purpose of generating 8,00,000 thousand additional employment and increasing the general public income. Presenting the annual budget for 2007-08, state Finance Minister Ashim Dasgupta said of the total budgetary proposal for Rs 46,214 crore, a total amount of Rs 10,224 crore has been set aside for the planned budget proposal with a hike of 22.....

No force against farmers' will : President

Shillong, Mar 16 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today averred that force should not be used against the will of the farmers.
