Kahlon elected Punjab assembly Speaker

Chandigarh, Mar 16 (UNI) Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Nirmal Singh Kahlon was today unanmiously elected the Speaker of the Punjab assembly.

The name of Mr Kahlon was proposed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, and seconded by the leader of the BJP Legislature party Manoranjan Kalia.

Leader of opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal also accorded her approval to Mr Kahlon.

Both Mr Badal and Kalia congratulated Mr Kahlon on his election.

Mr Kahlon, who was elected to the 13th Vidhan Sabha from his traditional assembly constituency Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur, has earlier experience in conducting the House. He had remained the Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha in 1985, when Mr Surjit Singh Barnala was the Chief Minister.

In the 1997 SAD-BJP governmment, he was the minister for rural development and panchayats.

3 heli-skiers, crew feared dead in a helicopter crash in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 16 (UNI) Three French skiers, including Selven Saudan, and two crew members were feared dead after their helicopter crashed in Sonmarg area in Jammu and Kashmir today. Director Tourism Farooq Ahmad Shah told UNI the helicopter lost control with Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Srinagar while it was flying over Sonmarg area. He said filipino helicopter carrying three French skiers and two crew members was scheduled to land at Nehru helipad at 1130 hours. Mr Shah said some people.....

HM'S hideout busted in Doda

Jammu, Mar 16 (UNI) Army today recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a cave-like hideout of hizbul mujahideen (HM) militant outfit in doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said. On a tip-off, troops of 10 rashtriya rifles (RR) and territorial army (TA) busted a natural cave in a jungle area of forewan near doda town, sources said. A huge quantity of arms and ammunition, including three under barrel grenade launcher (UBGL), two ubgls, two at rifle.....

Ranibodli: Relatives look for their beloved's remains

Ranibodli, Chhattisgarh, Mar 16 (UNI) Amidst a multitude of corpses, a little girl innocently touched her father's body. She was unaware of the reason for her mother's wails. An old man holding his grandchild, meanwhile, looked for his young son's remains. They were among several grieving relatives at this Dantewada district village where 55 security personnel, including 39 tribal youth working as special police officers (SPOs), were killed when Maoist rebels raided a police camp in the pre-dawn hours yesterday......
