Haryana presents Rs 6.86 cr deficit budget

Chandigarh, Mar 16 (UNI) Haryana Finance Minister Birender Singh today presented a Rs 21,967 crore budget for 2007-08 with a deficit of Rs 6.86 crore, with no new tax proposals.

Presenting the budget estimates in the state assembly, Mr Singh said the year 2007-08 was likely to open with a deficit of Rs 33.48 crore and to close with a deficit of Rs 6.86 crore with year's account surplus of Rs 26.62 crore.

Stating that no new tax proposals had been made in the budget, he said a cess on banquet halls and marriage palaces would be levied. The quantum of cess was yet to work out.

He said the annual plan outlay was proposed at Rs 5,300 crore.

Of this, Power sector would be allocated Rs 844 crore, Irrigation Rs 718 crore, roads and transport Rs 505 crore and water supply and sanitation Rs 632 crore.

For other social sector programmes, the allocation would be Rs Rs 1963 crore which included Rs 730 crore for education, industrial training, technical education, Rs 580 crore for social justice and empowerment, Rs 155 crore for women and child development, Rs 116 crore for health services and Rs 100 crore for welfare of SCs and OBCs.

Chautala slams Haryana budget

Chandigarh, Mar 16 (UNI) Former chief minister and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) supremo Om Parkash Chautala has slammed the Haryana Budget as ''directionless and disappointing for all sections of the society''. In a statement here, Mr Chautala said no relief had been given in the budget to peasantry, traders, employees, women and the youth. India, Singapore to step up cooperation in security

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) India and Singapore have decided to further expand cooperation in security matters. An agreement to this effect was reached at a meeting between Singapore Deputy Prime Minister S Jayakumar and Home Minister Shivraj Patil here yesterday. During the 40-minute long meeting at the North Block, the two leaders discussed several issues of bilateral interest and shared experience in fighting terrorism, policing big cities and maintaining social harmony.
