New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) Master Plan for Delhi 2021 envisages the development of different types of houses through public, co-operative and private sectors, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy told Parliament today.
About 40 per cent of the housing need could potentially be satisfied through redevelopment and up-gradation of existing areas of the city and the remaining 60 per cent could be met in new areas to be developed as urban extension, he said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
About 75,000 dwelling units per annum in different categories would have to be developed in the urban extensions.
The MPD 2021 also proposed the involvement of private sector in land assembly and housing development in order to promote housing activities.
The MPD 2021 envisaged development of shelter, physical and social infrastructure in a planned manner. The estimated population of the naitonal capital would be in the range of 220 to 230 lakh in the year 2021, and an additional 24-lakh dwelling units would be needed to meet the housing requirement.
This included 20 lakh dwelling units for additional population and backlog of about four lakh units comprising of one lakh net shortage and the rest for replacement of dilapidated and kutcha structures.
The housing for urban poor constituted 50-55 per cent of the total projected housing requirement in the form of two rooms or less.
The National Capital Region Planning Board had informed that its constituent states -- Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh -- promoted construction of dwelling units, both by plotted and flatted residential development, in public and private sectors.
As per estimates made by the Working Group on Urban Housing for Eleventh Plan, there was a shortage of 24.71 million dwelling units of which as much as 21.78 million pertain to Economically Weaker Sections and 2.89 million was the requirement of housing for Low Income Group at the start of the Eleventh Five Year Plan.
