Blind love for blind mother

Berhampur, Orissa, Mar 16 (UNI) Carrying his mother on his shoulders for the last eleven years is no mean feat, especially so when his blind love for his 'blind' mother helped him take her on a pilgrimage to the holy places across the country.

Thirty-five-year-old Kailash Giri Brahmachari, popularly known as ''modern Sravan Kumar'', who has been carrying his visually impaired mother for the last eleven years, has entered this silk city on way to Puri dham.

A resident of Bargi village in Madhya Pradesh, Kailash has been carrying his 81-year-old mother Kirti Devi, weighing about 60 kgs, on his shoulders in a makeshift swing by foot on ''Chardham Yatra''.

His first halt was at Jagannath temple's Gosaninuagaon and Courtpeta here since Tuesday last and he left for Puri with his mother yesyerday.

Kailash's mission started eleven years ago when he was 24 to fulfill the wishes of his mother to have a darshan of all the '' Char Dham''(the four holy places in India).

'' When I was only five, my father died. My mother expressed her desire to visit Char Dham but then I had no money. I heard of Sravan Kumar and opted for the makeshift swing comprising bamboo shaft,'' Kailash said.

He said he started his journey from Hanuman temple in Ujjain and traversed through Kasi, Ayodhya, Chitrakut, Allahabad, Rameswar, Chennai and Tirupati covering a distance of about four to nine kilo meters a day.

The makeshift swing of Kailash weighs nearly 120-kg along with mother and he never showed exhaustion with the load. He cooks food for both of them during night halts.

Both the mother and son take one meal a day and fruits with ''kheer'' during night with the donation from some generous people.

They have already visited Rameswaram and plan to visit Badrinath and Dwarka after Puri Dham.

''God has entrusted me to carry my mother on my shoulder. It is an uphill task and I pray to God not to give such burden to anybody,'' Kailash said. Even with the burden of carrying his mother for the last eleven years, Kailash is willing to marry someone, who could voluntarily look after his blind mother and support him in his endeavour.
