Atomic energy provides clean power from uranium: President

Shillong, Mar 16 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today said Atomic Energy Division provides clean power from uranium and the solar system.

Interacting with students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on the much hyped uranium mining in the state, Dr Kalam said wherever the Atomic Energy Division had taken up the project, it had provided an eco-friendly environment and there was no radiation problem.

He said the country has 10 uranium mining reactors and generation of power from uranium was needed from the decreasing fossil power.

In reply to another question from students on the border fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border, Dr Kalam said border fencing was necessitated to check infiltration, but at the same time the economic condition of the villagers in the border area should be developed.

On sports, he said the north east region has vast potential regarding sports and could shine provided they were given opportunities, but they still had lots to improve before reaching the highest level.

Regarding the North eastern region as an earthquake prone area, a student wanted to know whether any prediction could be made before an earthquake occured.

'' We cannot assess the exact timing of an earthquake, but research is on'' the President said and hoped that such a forecast could be made.

Left calls for Begusarai bandh tomorrow

Begusarai, Mar 16 (UNI) The CPI and CPI(ML) today gave a joint call for 'Begusarai Bandh' tomorrow to protest the killing of two persons in police firing at Matihani block premises when a mob turned violent after the postponement of distribution of ration coupons among them. Two killed in police firing, Inquiry ordered

Patna, Mar 16 (UNI) The Bihar government tonight ordered a judicial inquiry into police firing at Matihani in Begusarai district in which two died and as many injured. Earlier in the day, an unruly mob attacked and torched the block office at Matihani and damaged government vehicles besides other public properties. District Magistrate Sanjeev Hans said that some anti-socials in the mob attacked the police and started stone pelting when use of canes and lathis failed to repulse the furious mob,.....
