President Kalam to visit Shillong tomorrow

Shillong, Mar 15 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam will be on his second visit to Meghalaya tomorrow.

Security has been tightened in Meghalaya in view of the President's visit who will be arriving here at 1030 hrs from Nagaland by a special Indian Air Force helicopter.

Soon after his arrival, Dr Kalam will go to Raj Bhawan and then proceed to Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to address the 60-member house.

This will be first time that India's first citizen will address the legislators in Meghalaya.

He will also visit the North Eastern Hills University here.

State's Director General of Police William Richmond Marbaniang assured that all security arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward incident during his visit.

Mr Marbaniang said additional security forces were also being deployed in the city.

Meanwhile, barricades were set up along the roadside, from the Civil Hospital here to the temporary Assembly building at Rilbong.

Passes will not be issued to public visitors into the Assembly tomorrow due to security reasons, Speaker M M Danggo said, adding that there will be a live telecast of the programme from Shillong Doordarshan Kendra.

Congress MLA's grill UPA govt in J'khand

Ranchi, Mar 15 (UNI) The UPA-backed Madhu Koda government's major ally Congress today demanded an inquiry into the new excise policy in the Jharkhand Assembly, saying it was incurring a huge loss to the state. Bengal Minister questiones Governor's jurisdiction

Kolkata, Mar 15 (UNI) West Bengal Transport Minister Subhash Chakraborty created a ripple in the West Bengal Assembly today when he questioned the jurisdiction of the Governor in making a public statement on the Nandigram incident. Asserting that the Left Front Government would continue to work for industrialisation and take on any threat to law and order, Mr Chakraborty also challenged the Opposition on its demand for imposition of President's rule in the state.
