Parihar encounter: Reward for cops

Bhopal, Mar 15 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh government will appoint as sub-inspector -- on compassionate grounds -- the son of slain Inspector Veerendra Singh Bhadauria, while other police personnel involved in an encounter with the Jagjivan Parihar dacoit gang would be rewarded, Minister of State for Home Nagendra Singh announced today.

Making a suo moto statement in the Assembly, Mr Singh said that seven bandits, including chieftain Parihar and his brother Param Singh, were eliminated in yesterday's encounter at a village in Morena district. Dacoit Ramlakhan Gadaria, who hailed from Rajasthan's Dholpur district, was also killed.

Six firearms and cartridges were seized from their possession.

Inspector Bhadauria, posted at Porsa as Town Inspector, was killed while five personnel -- including two inspectors -- were injured.

Mr Singh said that Jagjivan carried a total reward of Rs 7.25 lakh comprising Rs 2 lakh announced by the Madhya Pradesh government, Rs 5 lakh by Uttar Pradesh and Rs 25,000 by Rajasthan.

Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi and Dr Govind Singh (both Cong) lauded the Police Department's success and sought suitable rewards, including promotion, to the personnel.

28 girls escape rebel wrath at Ranibodli

Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Mar 15 (UNI) Twenty-eight girls had a miraculous escape when naxals stormed a police camp -- housed in an Ashram school building -- at Dantewada district's Ranibodli, killing 50 people in the wee hours today. An injured Chhattisgarh Special Armed Force (CSAF) Constable Kamal Gawde, who was brought here for treatment, told UNI that several armed rebels cordoned off the girls school where 28 students were present. Crop damage survey in a fortnight: Minister

Bhopal, Mar 15 (UNI) Survey to assess damage to crops caused by recent unseasonal rains and hailstorm in different districts of Madhya Pradesh will be carried out within a fortnight and compensation distributed at the earliest, Revenue Minister Kamal Patel told the Assembly today. Naxal attack toll up to 54

Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Mar 15 (UNI) In the worst-ever strike of its kind in the past two decades, at least 54 security personnel were killed when armed Maoists stormed a police camp at Ranibodli in south Bastar's Dantewada district in the pre-dawn hours today. Local police confirmed the death of 38 special police officers and 16 constables of the Chhattisgarh Special Armed Force saying that 11 sustained severe burns as the rebels used petrol bombs.
