NCP's Rajlaxmi Bhosale wins Mayoral poll, Sena bags Dy Mayor's post

Pune, Mar 15 (UNI) National Congress Party's Rajlaxmi Bhosale won the Mayoral election to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) here today, defeating the Congress candidate Shailaja Manikrao Khedekar, even as the BJP staged a walk out protesting the attack on its member by the NCP.

Ms Bhosale garnered 67 votes, while Ms Khedekar got 52 votes in the election.

With the NCP winning the election, the Congress control over the civic body has come to an end.

District Collector Prabhakar Deshmukh conducted the poll in the morning. The Mayor was elected by show of hands. He gave time for withdrawing nominations and five candidates--Shiv Sena's Megha Babar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Chhaya Gadade, BJP's Mukta Tilak and Usha Kelkar and Mangala Mantri--withdrew their nominations.

Ms Bhosale was supported by 41 NCP corporators, one Sena rebel candidate, five independents and 20 Shiv Sena members.

Before the voting, the BJP group, led by Corporator Vikas Matkari, staged a walk-out as they protested the violent attack on their Zilla Parishad candidate Shrikant Shitole by NCP workers.

However, the BJP returned and voted for the Shiv Sena candidate Chandrakant Mokate, who was contesting the election for the Deputy Mayor's post. He secured 92 votes defeating Congress candidate Avinash Salave, who got 52. Mokate received the support from the NCP.

The NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, has finally ousted Suresh Kalmadi-led Congress from the city and the district. The Congress reigned for nearly two decades, with Mr Kalmadi calling the shots for over a decade. He managed to get the support of 8 independents and 8 MNS members, but lost to the NCP supported by Sena.
