Members seek central invention on Cauvery row

Bangalore, Mar 15 (UNI) Members in the Karnataka Assembly today urged the Union Government to immediately intervene and resolve issues arising out of the final award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) to safeguard the federal system of the country.

Participating in the debate on the Cauvery issue, suspended JD(S) member P G R Sindhia said that the political parties cutting across party line should attempt to create an atmosphere in favour of the State at the national level and wanted the Congress to take a lead.

Welcoming Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's statement that he was prepared for talks with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to solve the issue, he said the Chief Minister had once again had upheld the values of the Kanndigas and the State by showing interest in the holding of negotiations.

Mr Vatal Nagaraj(Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha) said that there was a need for birth of a new power, if the State failed to assert its rights over water and border.

The setting up of the CWDT itself was a big conspiracy, he added.

He said that the State should take bold steps including going ahead with the second phase work of Kabini dam.

lamenting that there was lack of political will in the State, he said that if the Verdict was not in favour of Tamil Nadu, all the Ministers from that State would have quit from the Union Ministry, expressing their solidarity.
