Mumbai , Mar 15 (UNI) The Legislative Assembly today passed the bill to repeal Maharashtra State Enterprises (Restructuring and other special provisions) Act 2000.

The bill was moved by Finance minister Jayant Patil. Sudhir Mungantiwar, Eknat Khadse, Shobha Phadanvis, Devendra Phadanvis (All BJP) Nana Patole (CONG), Ramesh Bang (NCP), R O Patil (Shiv Sena) Narsayya Adam (CPM), Wamanrao Chatap (Swatantra Bharat paksha).

They said the need of the hour was to ensure that State owned corporations, whose aim was welfare of the society, needed to be strengthered and reconstituted.

They also felt the image of such Corporations was used to ''rehabilitate'' politicians who can't be accomodated in other posts and this needs to be changed.

The opposition members termed the decision of the government to repeal the act as its failure. Mr patil said on noticing that operational and financial viability of several State entperises, established over the years for assisting the achievement of the objectives of the welfare State has deteriorated progressively.

The State government enacted the Maharashtra State enterprises (restructuring and other special provisions) Act 2000 for making available the services of an expert body to provide mandatory advice and assistance to government as well as to such enterprises with a view to enable such State enterprises to observe strict financial discipline and revival or to reorganise and restructure themselves to become financially viable and operationally sound.

The experience so far gained in implementing the provisions of the act has revealed the act has failed to achieve the desired results. He said the Sharad Upasni Committee had studied 18 State owned corporation and recommended closure of all corportations and resturcting of others. The recommendations were completed, while the review of rest of the corporations will be done by a committe to be headed by him.
