Kerala proposes to change shock treatment for mental patients

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathy today told the Assembly that the government was proposing to make a change to the existing system of 'shock treatment' for treating mental patients.

Replying to queries by Mr K Ajith and others, she said the government would discuss the issue with experts in this field for replacing the cruel method of treatment with counselling.

Ms Sreemathy said steps would also be taken to impart training to nurses working in mental health institutions on counselling methods.

Stating family members hesitated to take mental patients back home even after they had recovered, due to stigma, the Minister said the government would take all measures to rehabilitate them.

Stating that effective medicines and treatment were available in Ayurveda, she said the government would examine how the traditional methods of treatment could be effectively used.

The Health Minister also said the government was seriously considering an awareness campaign at school and college level to reduce mental depression among students. The matter would be discussed with the Education Department.

Govt considering 'satellite city' proposal

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem today informed the Assembly that the government was seriously considering the proposal of setting up a 'satellite city' in the state. In a written reply, he said the government was communicating the issue with various agencies within the country and outside. Mr Kareem disclosed that the government had already held preliminary talks with a Malaysian government undertaking company in this regard. If the proposal was materialised, the satellite city would be established.....

KPTCL braces up to tackle power shortage during summer

Kerala Govt sanctions Rs 13.6 cr to meet drought

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) Kerala Revenue Minister K P Rajendran told the State Assembly today a sum of Rs 13.6 crore had been sanctioned to tackle the impending drought which was expected to be more severe in the state this year. Replying to a Calling Attention Motion by Mr M Hamsa (CPI-M), he said the next Cabinet meeting would decide on other measures to meet the situation. Entrusting supervision of relief work with ministers would also be decided at the Cabinet.....
