Gujarat accorded priority by Central Govt: Anandiben

Gandhinagar, Mar 15 (UNI) The Central Government has taken note of the State government's efforts under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSY) in providing quality education and secondary facilities like building new schools, Anandiben Patel said in the Legislative Assembly today.

In reply to the budgetary demands of her ministry, she said that the State government has made a provision of Rs 70 crore for the SSY. Primary schools would be benefited under this scheme.

She said biometric attendance register has been proposed as a pilot project at a cost of Rs 150 lakh to improve attendance in schools located in backward and remote areas like Narmada district.

She said English language training would be given to youths between the age of 15 and 35 years at the 1,000 centers set up across the State for the same. This will help them get jobs. In this, five lakh persons would be given 20 days training by international certificate course issuing agencies, Ms Patel said.

She said the number of colleges in the State had increased. She said earlier 90 colleges had 13,185 seats and now there are 241 colleges offering 40,884 seats. This would help students to opt for the college and degree their choice.

One killed in tanker-truck collision

Anand, Mar 15 (UNI) An oil tanker driver was burnt to death and two others were injured when the tanker was hit from behind by a tempo after a head-on collision with another truck earlier, near Asodhar Char Rasta, 15 kms away from Anand, in the wee hours of today. Police sources said the incident occured on the National Highway No 8 when the oil tanker, on its way from Baroda to Vidyanagar, collided head-on with a truck. The empty tanker.....

Court sentences man to life imprisonment for murdering wife

Nadiad, Mar 15 (UNI) A local fast-track court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife at village Mehlav in Kheda district last year. Additional Sessions Judge T K Gurnani found Baldevbhai Vasava guilty of murdering his wife Shakuntalaben Vasava and awarded life imprisonment to him. The Judge also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 in default of which he would have to undergo simple imprisonment for another three years. The fine amount, if paid, should be kept.....

Surveyor suspended for accepting bribe

Surat, Mar 16 (UNI) A surveyor with the Varachcha zone of Surat Municipal Corporation was suspended today after anti-corruption bureau sleuths caught him red handed while accepting bribe. The accused Kamalesh Patel was caught yesterday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,400 in a property transaction in Poonagam area, sources said. Today, acting Municipal Commissioner Vijay Sonavane suspended the accused, SMC sources added. UNI.....
