Farmers' Debt Relief Commission comes into existence

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 15 (UNI) The Kerala Government today announced the setting up of a five-member Farmers' Debt Relief Commission with Retired High Court Judge K A Abdul Gafoor as its Chairman.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan in the State Assembly.

The Commission, constituted according to the provisions of the Kerala Farmers' Debt Relief Act, would have powers to settle farm loans taken by farmers from banks and other financial institutions and decide on compensation for crop losses.

The legislation was passed by the State Assembly in the context of increased suicides by debt-ridden farmers.

European resolution on dalits lacked balance: India

New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) India has lodged a protest with the European Parliament for its resolution on dalits in the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
