Deputy Mayor calls for separate Mahila Budget in the Corporation

Mumbai, Mar 15 (UNI) The First woman deputy Mayor of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Ms Vidya Thakur today emphasised the need to have a seperate 'Mahila Budget' to enhance facilities for women in the metropolis.

Addressing her maiden press conference after taking over as the Deputy Mayor, Ms Thakur said separate budget for woman was the need of the hour and such funds would be utilised on education, health and to provide finance to women at a lower interest rate for self-employment.

Ms Thakur said there were many women in the metropolis, who lose their lives due to breast cancer in a year because they can not afford the expensive treatments. She said she plans to spread awareness programme about breast cancer in slum areas here.

She said she will propose the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking to start Special Mahila buses during peak hours just like the Railways.

HC asks Mah Govt to appoint retired HC judge to head KDMC Committee

Mumbai, Mar 15 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra government to appoint a retired High Court judge as head of a committee to scrutinise the past records and fix responsibility for rampant illegal constructions that have come up between 1987 and 2004 in the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) area. Assistant Government Pleader Pradip Patil informed the court that the state government had recently spoken to eight retired chief secretaries. But only D K Afzalpurkar has agreed.....

HC refuses to restrain four co-opted members from voting

Mumbai, Mar 15 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today refused to restrain four co-opted members from voting in tomorrow's election of the chairman to Education committee of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and at the same time clarified that the election will be subject to final order of the court in the matter. Body of a missing yoth found in river

Surat, Mar 15 (UNI) Body of a tourist taxi driver, who was missing from Bhaiya Nagar in Poonagam, was found from the Tapi river in Navadi area today. Police sources said Rajesh Bhavsar (29), was missing since Tuesday. His relatives had filed a complaint with the police. However, Surat Fire Brigade sources recovered his body at around noon.
