Congress and Trinamool Congress on a rampage,life goes haywire

Kolkata, Mar 15 (UNI) Train services were disrupted in Howrah and Sealdah, vehicular traffic came to a halt and Government buses were damaged in several places of the city today as Congress and Trinamool Congress supporters went on a rampage while protesting against yesterday's police firing in Nandigram.

According to official sources, the Sealdah-bound Rajdhani Express had to be detained near Dankuni for 15 minutes while local trains were stopped at different points under Eastern Railway's Howrah and Sealdah Dvisions following squatting on railway tracks by demonstrators.

Supporters of Chhatra Parishad, the students wing of the Congress, set ablaze a Government bus in the city's Sova Bazar area, while they damaged a number of other buses eslewhere.

Students and teachers of Jadavpur University put up a road block in Jadavpur area while traffic movement was disrupted in Bowbazar, Amherst Street, Kidderpore and Ultadanga following road blockades by Trinamool Congress and Congress activists.

Some Congress supporters held a snap demonstration in front of the state Secretariat at Writers' Buildings, while demonstration was held also outside the state Assembly.

A section of lawyers clashed with police while trying to stage demonstration in front of Writers' Buildings.

Meanwhile, condemning the Nandigram incident, painter Subhaprasanna, film maker Gautam Ghosh and theatre personality Bibhash Chakraborty demanded that Chief Minister step down.

Describing the police firing as a "heinous act" they alleged at a press conference that the whole operation was carried out deliberately.

Foolproof security for Kalam in Meghalaya

Shillong, Mar 15 (UNI) The Meghalaya government has made foolproof security arrangements here in view of President A P J Abdul Kalam's visit tomorrow. Buddhadeb defends police action at Nandigram

Kolkata, Mar 15 (UNI) Amid a walk-out by the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today defended yesterday's police action in Nandigram but promised that land would not be acquired there for the proposed chemical hub. Making a statement on the incident in which 14 people were killed, the Chief Minister said the Government needed to establish rule of the law in Nandigram and police were compelled to fire. One ULFA militant killed: eight injured in bomb explosion

Guwahati, Mar 15 (UNI) One ULFA militant was killed and eight were injured in two separate incidents of bomb explosions in Asom today. One ULFA militant was killed at Sonari in Sivsagar district this morning when the bomb he was carrying exploded. Four passers by were also injured in the blast that occurred about 800 metres away from Sonari police station. The ULFA militant was carrying the bomb in his jacket. Four more were injured in another bomb explosion that occurred.....
